Emerging report on Sunday morning, indicates that that candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the Rivers State rerun poll, were in remarkable lead, even as three persons were feared dead, amid allegations of ballot box snatching, and electoral malpractices against security operatives.
Some soldiers and operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, of the Nigeria Police Force, allegedly had a field day, carting away with INEC materials, while also hunting some politicians for arrest.
Sources, said the security agencies focused on politicians, who were mostly members of the PDP, especially candidates contesting the election.
At most of the street corners and roads in Port Harcourt, the State capital, heavily armed and tagged security operatives, checked the few vehicles plying the roads, while others were ferried by Hilux vans, and motorcycles.
Commenting on the election, Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, accused the Nigerian Army, and the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, of the Nigerian Police, of killing PDP agents, hijacking electoral materials, and working to deliver a particular candidate in the Rivers South-East Senatorial District.
He however, said that no matter the use of the Nigerian Army, and SARS personnel by the APC government, Rivers State will never be conquered by them. .
Reacting to the mass shootings by the Nigerian Army, and the Police, in Khana, Gokana, Akuku-Toru, and Etche Local Government Areas on the election day, Wike said that the security agencies were deployed to the State, to manipulate the results of the poll.
He said, true to the claim by the APC Governors and leaders, that they will use federal might against the Rivers people, the military was used in rigging the rerun elections, in parts of the State.
The Governor added, that in Khana Local Government Area, election materials for the entire Local Government Area, were hijacked by the Nigerian Army, and SARS personnel.
He further stated, that in Gokana Local Government Area, soldiers hijacked election materials for Wards 2 and 3 in Bodo City, where the military also killed two persons, in the process of fleeing with the materials.
According to Wike, out of the 19 wards of Etche Local Government Area, soldiers and SARS personnel, hijacked election materials for 4 wards, adding that, one APC chieftain has been arrested with two AK47.
He added, that in Opobo-Nkoro Local Government Area, soldiers hijacked election materials, and took same to the home of Dr Sam Sam Jaja of APC.
Wike said: “I anticipated it. I tried to let the world to know that these are the plans of the security agencies.“In my entire political career, I have never experienced this kind of invasion by security agencies.“What causes violence, is when you give certain persons undue advantage. Be assured that we are resisting it; it may take our lives, but we will resist to the last”, Wike said.
Presently, party faithfuls are chanting slogans such as, “We no gree”, “no result sheet, no election”,”Our votes must count.”
The supporters said they had lost confidence in INEC’s ability to conduct a free, fair, and credible election in the area.
The protest had caused many voters to leave the polling units, for fear of molestation.
