A Supreme Court Judge, Marco Aurelio Mello, has on Tuesday, December 6, suspended Brazil’s Senate Leader, Renan Calheiros, over damning corruption allegation.
Protesters had on Sunday, held demonstrations, demanding Calheiros’ ouster, with a crowd in Brasilia chanting “lock Renan up!” as they performed a mock funeral with a coffin inscribed “corruption.”
The suspension is with “immediate effect”, as it awaits the confirmation of the majority of Judges on the Supreme Court bench.
The decision to suspend the Senate leader, came as an opposition group, Rede, had called for the suspension, based on the premise that, as an official in line for Presidential succession — as the Senate leader is — cannot hold his or her position, while facing corruption trial.
Calheiros, is facing trial for alleged embezzlement, and for using public funds to make maintenance payments to a woman, with whom he had a child.
According to reports, plans are on top gear to pick Calheiros’ successor, while the corruption trial lasts.
