President Muhammadu Buhari’s change mantra, coupled with his touted anti-corruption war, has landed the world most populous black nation, Nigeria, as the third poorest country in the world, with 35 million people living below the poverty line.
According to an annual global wealth report compiled by the Swiss bank, Credit Suisse, on Tuesday evening, 35 million Nigerians, were classified among the poorest people in the world, after China’s 72 million, while India tops the list, with 246 million people.
This report came at a time when Nigeria is suffering under the heavy weight of economic recession, and the nose diving naira, with the prices of foodstuffs hitting the roof top, among others, courtesy of the President Buhari-led administration.
It was reportedly gathered, that three quarter of the world’s poorest people, live in Asian, and African countries.
Other countries contributing significantly to the bottom wealth bracket are: Russia, with 28 million of the world’s poorest; Ukraine, with 25 million; and the United States of America, USA, with 21 million.
Meanwhile, the wealthiest country in the world is Switzerland; the Swiss are the world’s richest people, 11 times wealthier than the average world citizen.
The people of Switzerland, make up only 0.1 percent of the global population, but they own 1.4 percent of the world’s assets.
