Former President, Goodluck Jonathan, has on Monday, September 12, advised Nigerians and by extension, President Muhammadu Buhari, to put the love of the country above personal interests.
He said this would make the “Nigeria of our dreams”, possible.
This came at the time when Nigerian Muslims joined their counterparts all over the world, to mark this year’s Ed-El-Kabir celebration, amidst the economic recession confronting the nation.
In Jonathan’s goodwill message to Muslim faithfuls and Buhari in particular, he cited the example of Prophet Ibrahim, who was willing to sacrifice his son.
“Let us imbibe Ibrahim’s ideals, and put Nigeria first in all we do. I salute the Muslim Ummah this Sallah. Happy Eid-El-Kabir,” he wrote on Twitter.
He added: “Without self-sacrifice, we will never see the Nigeria of our dreams, and will always think, ‘what about me’, instead of ‘what about Nigeria’.
“On Eid-El-Kabir, we honour Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son. This must teach us that we must all sacrifice for Nigeria’s greatness”.
However, the Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC, had blamed the economic recession on lack of proper governance.
“Though painful, we are constrained to remind Nigerians that they are the architects of their own fate. The current economic downturn did not come from the blues. It is self-imposed. We encouraged graft. We sacrificed excellence on the altar of mediocrity.
“We grandstood, where we should be frank and sincere. Due to our strange culture of waste, we buried our parents and loved ones, by throwing huge sums of money into the dustbin.
“We awarded chieftaincy titles to rogues and fraudsters. We celebrated international thieves who jumped bail abroad. Parents hired mercenaries to impersonate their children and write examinations for them. We certified graduates who could not compose simple correct sentences. We bastardised and incapacitated the security agencies. We took religion to the height of extremism. Now it is payback time”.
