Eight players and two officials of Heartland were yesterday hospitalized following Wednesday’s road crash in Maiduguri ahead of today's rescheduled match against the El-Kanemi Warriors in the Borno state capital.
The Naze Millionaires suffered a road crash on their way from the airport, Players and officials of the club were involved in a road crash when they were heading to their hotel after they left the Maiduguri Airport.

The accident had a speeding military van hitting the bus conveying the Heartland players and officials from the rear-end, leaving some suffering varying degrees of injuries.


It was a miracle as no death was recorded, while those injured were taken to a nearby hospital for medial attention.


Captain of Heartland, Chinedu Efugh, who might be unharmed confirmed the auto crash in a photo tweet.


Director of Media of Heartland FC, Cajetan Nkwopara said that the El Kanemi Warriors’ official vehicle which was at the Airport to take the team to their hotel in the Maiduguri metropolis was involved in an head on collision with a military vehicle which claimed various degree of injuries on all the players and officials of the club in the vehicle.


Nkwopara said: “We were involved in an accident shortly after we landed in Maiduguri. The driver of the El Kanemi Warriors’ vehicle stationed at the airport to carry us to town in readiness for the Thursday’s clash was involved in an auto crash due to over speeding. He collided with a military vehicle and all those in the vehicle who are either players or officials of the club suffered injuries.




He added: “As I speak with you, Ebele Obi has been given three injections while Mobi Oparaku our Team manager sustained a head injury while the fate of other seven players and another official has yet to be decided.


“Even though the home team are playing down the incidence it is our responsibility to say things as they are. We have reported to the LMC and we are praying that Thursday’s league tie is coming too soon based on what we experienced (today) on Wednesday in Maiduguri.




Nkwopara disclosed that they are monitoring the current situations of their players and that it is unreal is the Thursday league tie in Maiduguri will take place considering the injuries almost half of their playing staff for the tie are suffering from.


Captain of the team Chinedu Efugh in a telephone call on Wednesday night that the injured persons left the hospital and we're headed for the hotel but received orders from the doctor for them to return for X-Rays.


He also pleaded that the game be rescheduled due to the incident.


The league tie ought to have been played last weekend but flight hitches forced a postponement.


With the latest developments, Heartland FC awaits directives from the League Management Company (LMC) and hope that another suitable date for the El Kanemi/Heartland tie.
