Shortly after the judgement of Justice James Abundaga of the Abia North Election Rerun Petition Tribunal sitting in Umuahia, stakeholders including students, market women, traders and artisans thronged the streets of Umuahia and Aba to register their displeasure over the verdict.
The tribunal chairman had on Thursday struck out the petition filed by the Progressive Peoples’ Alliance (PPA) and former Governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Kalu against the declaration of Mao Ohuabunwa of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as winner of the controversial election.
Though it was a peaceful protest, the looks on the faces of the people were disturbing and alarming as they could not hide their unhappiness over the decision of the tribunal.
As they moved from one street to the other, the protesters were seen singing and carrying placards with different inscriptions such as “Kalu is the authentic winner”, “Appeal Court return OUK”,  “We want OUK”, “Ikpeazu, T.A Orji and MAO are enemies of Abians”
According to them, the ruling is biased and against the wish of the people, adding that Abia State government used taxpayers money to buy the judgment in support of the PDP candidate.
Speaking with our reporter, a student of Abia State University and a native of Ututu in Arochukwu LGA, who requested anonymity, said, “It is saddening and worrisome that the people’s wish can be denied. The March 16 rerun election was going on peaceful until the PDP thugs and agents including serving state officials stormed some polling units in Arochukwu Local Government to snatch ballot boxes and papers which they thumb-printed and stuffed with their own materials.

“Despite the fact that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) promised a credible election, the enemies of progress were still able to manoeuvre their way.
“More shocking is the fact that the INEC returning officer, Dr. Ejike Nwankwo  who had earlier declared the election inconclusive due to irregularities in some wards at Ohafia and Arochukwu LGs, could come back a few hours later after money had exchanged hands at the Abia State Government House, Umuahia to declare Mao Ohuabunwa as winner.
“It is important for the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation to read the riot act to the judiciary as they are the only hope for the common man.
According to Chief Chidi Onuoha, a community leader in Amaokwe Item, “I know that at the end of the day, the will of the people will come to pass. Kalu is a selfless politician and no doubt, we will continue to fight for him as he is the true winner of the elections.
In her remarks, Mrs.Nkem Nnamdi, a trader at the popular Ariara international market, said: “all we want is to have our son, Dr. Orji Kalu, in the national assembly. He performed well as governor and he is the only one that can take Abia North to the next level”, she declared.
