Three All Progressive Congress, APC, States have indicated interest to ending hunger in Nigeria, as it has keyed into President Muhammadu Buhari’s diversification policy, by making land available to agricultural investors, for the production of food.
Nigeria, currently has a land mass of 923,768 square kilometres, km2, suitable for Agriculture, but due to the long neglect of the sector, the nation for decades has been import depended.
In a bid to change the tides, President Buhari on assumption of office, had banned the importation of goods and services that can be easily produced in the country.
Niger, Borno and Taraba States which boast of the biggest land mass in the country, have become prime attractions for investments.
Out of Nigeria’s 923,768 land mass, Niger State has the largest land mass of 95,363km2, followed by Borno State with a land mass of 92,898km2 and Taraba State 59,400km2.
Kaduna State follows with a landmass of 46,053km2, then Bauchi with 45,837km2; Yobe, 45,502km2; Zamfara, 39,762km2; Adamawa, 36,917km2; Kwara, 36,825km2 and Kebbi, 36,800km2.
Majority of the States have arable land with abundant tourist destinations that are untapped.
Benue State, which prides itself as the “food basket” of the nation, has a landmass of 34,059km2 and a population of 4,219,244.
It is also followed by Plateau State, with a landmass of 30,913km2; Kogi, 29,833km2; Oyo, 28,454km2; Nasarawa, 27,117km2; Sokoto, 25,973km2 and Katsina, with 24,192km2 landmass.
Jigawa has a landmass of 23,154km2; Cross River, 20,156km2; Kano, 20,131km2; Gombe, 18,768km2; Edo, 17,802km2 and Delta, 17,698km2.
Official statistics established that Ogun State has a landmass of 16,762km2; Ondo, 15,500km2; Rivers, 11,077km2; Bayelsa, 10,773km2; Osun, 9,251km2; Federal Capital Territory, 7,315km2; Enugu, 7,161km2; Akwa Ibom, 7,081km2; Ekiti, 6,353km2 and Abia, 6,320km2.
Meanwhile, Ebonyi State has a landmass of 5,670km2; Imo, 5,100km2; Anambra, 4,844km2 and Lagos, 3,345km2.
According to Agricultural experts, if all the States effectively maximize their landmass in the production of different agricultural produce, Nigeria will not only be capable to feed itself, but other African countries.
It could be recalled, that President Buhari had on Tuesday, August 9, said that his administration will continue to accord agriculture premium importance, through programmes and initiatives designed to motivate the citizens to produce enough food to feed the nation.
He said, “We are hoping to motivate fellow Nigerians to work hard in this regard.“We will continue to work closely with other countries, to re-orient Nigerians towards their active involvement in the sector.“We believe that the impressive agricultural developmental strides achieved by countries like Vietnam, especially after the 1975 war, will be replicated here.”
