The Lagos State Government has discovered shallow oil wells built by landlords to steal diesel from pipelines belonging to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).
The houses 12 houses were shut in Abeokuta and Ibadan Streets in Ilasamaja area of Lagos state. Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Steve Ayorinde, made the disclosure while briefing newsmen in Ikeja on Friday.
Mr. Ayorinde said the oil wells were built for the purpose of illegally scooping diesel and selling same to members of the public. He said some of the affected landlords built pumping machines and boreholes to perpetrate the crime on a large scale.
Shallow Oil Wells Discovered In Houses In Lagos Mr. Ayorinde said the step to shut the wells and cordon off the area was taken by the state government to forestall loss of lives and property.
He disclosed that a combined team of the police command and other agencies carried out a thorough inspection of the entire area. The agencies discovered nothing less than 12 illegal shallow oil wells in the area. He also mentioned that samples of the substance had been taken for immediate investigation.
The samples will be tested to determine the true nature of the substance as well as the root cause of this unusual occurrence. Mr. Ayorinde said the state government was working with the NNPC for further investigation.
For safety reasons, the affected areas have been sealed off, especially on Abeokuta and Ibadan Streets. He said that government would also work with those who were likely to be displaced as a result of the development.
