The terrifying state of poverty and extent of infrastructural decay in Kogi-West Senatorial District, which is being represented by the self-acclaimed anti-corruption fighter, Senator Dino Maleye, who was also a former member of the House of Representatives, is no longer imaginary, but alarming.
Despite the constituency allowances that are distributed yearly to Lawmakers for development projects, Dino has allegedly milked his constituency dry, with no single visible project to his name.
As Post-Nigeria visited Kabba, the capital of Kogi-West and Aiyetoro, the village of Senator Dino, everywhere we turned, we could see the yawning gulf of poverty, as the residents were holed up under the scourging wave of dilapidated social amenities, while Dino lives in affluence and opulence.
When asked to take Post-Nigeria to the Borehole sites reportedly donated to the community by Dino, the okada man angrily asked, “where did you see Bore hole in this community? You have gone round yourself. Have you seen any? He is just deceiving himself.
“I can tell you that we won’t vote Dino again, because he has done nothing. Even the local Government Chairman has done more than Dino. All he does is to fight and talk around.
“See, let me tell you something, If Dino comes here today, no youth will hail him the usual way he was being hailed before. We don’t want him again. And you will see that in the next election.
“Can you imagine that for the past 3 months now, we don’t have electricity supply, and we say we have a Senator. People are hungry and there is hardship everywhere”.
No thanks to the scourge of greed that pervades Dino’s penchant for accumulating expensive cars at the expense of his poor Constituency.
As Post-Nigeria journeyed from Kabba to Aiyetoro , the roads were littered with potholes and erosion. You could see the pains and frustration of the people, who overwhelming voted for Dino in 2015, as they made efforts to pass through the roads.
The mention of the name ‘Dino Maleye’ is a taboo in Aiyetoro, as the villagers hate him with passion, because of his litany of failed promises.
As Post-Nigeria’s correspondents lodged in Pioneer Hotel, close to Dino’s residence, it was all tale of woes of ‘a son of the soil’, who has resolved to frustrating the fingers that fed him.
Dino Melaye's House
“Dino has done nothing for us. Can’t you see for yourself? All the campaign promises have not been fulfilled.
“He even promised to tar the road leading to Senator Smart Adeyemi’s house, but up till now, we have seen nothing from him.
“We voted Smart out for Dino, but we have seen no difference between the two of them.
“All these Ruffians we have, are just dealing with us in this place”, a resident of Aiyetoro said.
THE POOR STATE OF THE ROADS
Kabba Market Road, Kano Road and Korede Road linking to the only General Hospital in Kabba are all dotted with potholes and pregnant women find it difficult to ply the roads. Bad roads are responsible for most of the accidents that happen on the road.
Also, pothole infested roads are increasingly becoming the operational zones of criminals and armed robbers.
This is true of the Obajana-Oshokoshoko-Kabba-Mopa-Isanlu-Egbe Road. This is a federal road that links most parts of the West Senatorial District to the rest part of Kogi State.
It is also the fastest link between Kwara and Kogi State. The road is now in a deplorable state and it has also become a safe haven for armed bandits, who now subject motorists plying the route to harrowing experiences.
THE SCHOOLS ARE IN WORST CONDITION
Government Secondary School Aiyetoro Gbede
The schools visited in the senatorial district are in the worst State. This includes Methodist primary School, St Paul School, Korede all in Kabba metropolis.
The worst of it all are the schools located at Aiyetoro-Gbede in Dino’s village. The schools are model Primary School and Government secondary School, Aiyetoro.
A visit to those schools shows ramshackle and dilapidated school buildings, where pupils now learning without facilities for effective learning and assimilation.
The schools are in terrible State, with blown off roofs and the classes overtaken by weeds.
THE RESIDENTS LIVE IN GHETTOS BERET OF SOCIAL AMENITIES
As Post-Nigeria correspondents moved round the villages and towns, it was discovered that almost 70 percent of the residents dwell in ghettos and shanties.
The houses that surround Dino’s residence are poorly structured with the road leading to his mansion untarred and covered with erosion.
This is a call to the Distinguished Senator, to redirect his energy towards bringing developments to his constituency.
