The Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, is considering reducing the number of work days in the State, from five to three, to enable the government cut salaries.
The Governor, who made this known while briefing journalists on the state of affairs in the State, at his residence in Owerri said, the reduction of work days would enable workers to attend to other activities that would generate money, to supplement their monthly salaries, to take care of their families.
He said, ”I encourage Imo workers to find additional things to do to support their families, because of the economic situation we are facing in Nigeria.“We are considering reducing the working days from five to three in Imo, so that workers will use the rest of the days to work and support their families,” Okorocaha said.
Although, he was not specific on when it will commence, he disclosed that the Imo State government was equally planning to review workers’ salaries downward.
Post-Nigeria gathered, that the development has generated a lot of controversies and counter response, as most Imo State civil servants, see the Governor’s statement as anti people, and hence calling for his resignation.
Some of the State workers decried that, instead of the Governor to think outside the box to boost the State’s revenue base like his counterparts in other States of the federation, he has always positioned himself in robbing peter to pay paul.
Meanwhile, Okorocha, while giving his speech, added that in spite of the current payment of 70 percent of salaries to workers, the State still pays the highest salary scale among South-Eastern States of Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi and Enugu.
Okorocha, explained that a Director in other South-Eastern States, receives something a little above N90, 000, while in Imo, they receive above N100, 000.
“We intend to clear salary arrears up to July, by next week.“After that, we will consider downward review of salary to workers, to be at par with other States of South-East,” Okoracha said.
