Barr. Jimoh Ibrahim has won the governorship ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ondo State, on the platform of the party headed by Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff. In the primary, which held in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Monday, Ibrahim emerged the party’s standard-bearer with 501 votes, ahead of Mr. Olusola Ebiseni, first runner-up, who garnered 41 votes. Two other aspirants stepped down for Ibrahim prior to the election.
Inrahim’s emergence has set the stage for more controversy in the party as, a few days before, Mr. Eyitayo Jegede, had been voted the PDP candidate by the faction led by former Governor Ahmed Makarfi. Several court rulings have ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to recognise Sheriff as the party’s chairman and only candidates produced by his national working committee of the party, and, in some cases, court orders have told Sheriff to stop parading himself as the PDP chairman. Sheriff himself has famously said that the judiciary could plunge Nigeria into chaos.
