The Special Adviser to the Niger state Governor on Niger East matters Pius Wakili has raised the alarm over the regrouping of some Fulani
herdsmen armed and prowling the forest of villages in the Shiroro areas of the Niger East senatorial district. Wakili, a former state assembly member, who revealed this Journalists in Minna yesterday, urged the Joint Security Taskforce in the state to look into the activities of such armed herdsmen who also engage in cattle rustling.
“We have reports from most villages that these cattle rustlers totting AK 47 rifles are moving freely in forests in Allawa, Galadima Kogo, Erena and other villages,” he stated.
He stated that “the Joint Security Taskforce should intensify surveillance patrol in villages across zone B as these armed herders suspected to be rustlers have begun to hibernate in the areas months after they were dislodged.”
He commended the taskforce for curtailing the activities of cattle rustlers in that parts of the state but expressed the fear that the reappearance of the armed herders had become source of worry and fears to the villagers who were afraid to go out for their farming activities.
He said, ‘‘There is the need for security men to intensify patrols of the areas because our people have been noticing movements of armed men some without cows parading the villages with sophisticated weapons.”
The police public relations officer in the state DSP Bala Elikana, when asked about the development as claimed by the Special adviser said “the force is just hearing this report and we will investigate it and act appropriately.’’
