The office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in Abuja faces chaos and imminent shutdown as a Middle Belt Group issues threat.
A group by the name the Middle Belt Renaissance Movement, MBRM, has threatened to shutdown and occupy the Abuja office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, by Thursday if the commission fails to commence the prosecution of 52 persons allegedly indicted by the Justice Kpojime Commission of inquiry in Benue State.
According to Vanguard, the threat was issued in Makurdi by the National Coordinator of the group, Kuanum Terrence. He said the action would be aimed at compelling the EFCC to do the needful by commencing the prosecution of those indicted by the panel.
Terrence said, “We are bothered that after the report of Justice Elizabeth Kpojime Commission of enquiry which indicted former Governor Gabriel Suswam and 51 persons for allegedly looting Benue State treasury was submitted to the EFCC, the matter has been swept under the carpet. We have resolved to occupy the head office of the commission in protest over their inaction and after 72 hours, if they still fail to commence the prosecution of those indicted.”
Reacting, former Senior Special Assistant to former Governor Gabriel Suswam, Mr. Job Tsegha said the agitation was belated noting that a Makurdi High Court had recently in a ruling, quashed the report of the panel.
“I am not sure the MBRM is conversant with the developments in Benue State because the Kpojime report has already been quashed by a Makurdi High Court. “The whole thing was a witch-hunt so they should get their facts right.”
