Obasanjo said while responding to
a question by a participant at the Murtala Muhammed Foundation summit in Lagos where he was among a panel of discussants with former
Malawian President, Dr Joyce Banda and Chief Executive Officer of the Foundation, Aisha Muhammed-Oyebode, that scandals in politics ware widespread.
“Scandal is not just for women in politics. All leaders are scandalised. If you don’t want to be scandalised, don’t go into politics. Even in United States, where they pride themselves as the greatest in democracy, if you have been watching CNN, you will see how Trump people are abusing Hillary, trying to bring her down and Hillary
people abusing Trump, trying to bring him down. What I believe is important is your conscience. Ensure that whatever you do is what you can defend with your conscience,” Obasanjo said.
Earlier in her address; “Women in Solidarity: a new paradigm for inclusion”, Banda called for partnership among African women even as she reiterated the need for them to have the support of their male counterparts to lead the continent.
