PENGASSAN has directed its members to embark on gradual withdrawal of services from their various offices, sites and production facilities nationwide Another round of fuel scarcity may hit the country following the directive by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) to its members to embark on strike from Thursday, June 7.
According to Vanguard, the decision by PENGASSAN to embark on strike is occasioned by the alleged government refusal to address pending issues affecting the oil industry. The directive on the planned action was contained in a memo dated July 4, and is expected to affect all oil installations, offices, sites and production facilities, according to the acting general secretary of PENGASSAN Lumumba Okugbawa.
The memo which was addressed to all zonal chairmen, secretaries, all branch chairmen and secretaries, the senior staff association directed its members to embark on gradual withdrawal of services from their various offices, sites and production facilities. Okugbawa said: “Sequel to the above subject, the Association tried to engage the Federal Government on May 24,, 2016, which was inconclusive.
“The engagement was later fixed for June 23, 2016, which did not take place and again of June 30, 2016 which was unceremo- niously cancelled with no new date given.” According to the Cable, PENGASSAN blamed the proposed strike on the Federal Government’s inability to honour agreements contained in a May 12, 2016 communiqué.
Meanwhile, militant group Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) has again bombed oil facilities belonging to Chevron and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). The spokesperson of the group Mudoch Agbinibo revealed this in a brief statement claiming responsibility for attacks on Chevron and NNPC facilities.
