The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) kick-off its proposed nation wide strike today, May 18, over the recent removal of petroleum subsidies by the federal government on Wednesday, May 11. Until the removal, the official price of petrol was N87 per litre, but is now selling for N145 per litre. Although consumers have been paying as much as N200 for fuel due to scarcity. The compliance of Nigerians as regards the strike has been inconsistent in several parts of the nation as some are going about their duties, while others are adhering to the NLC’s order.
The NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) agreed to embark on today’s industrial action, despite a court order from the National Industrial Court stopping them from going on with the planned action.

3. Reconstitute the boards of PPPRA and NNPC without further delay and give them their statutory right to function alongside DPR in order to deepen the process of consultation, checks and balances in the downstream sector of the petroleum industry.
4. Intensify the prosecution of all those involved in subsidy scams with a view to recovery and sanctioning of the culpable
5. Put in place enhanced local refining capacity within a specified period in place of endless importation as an enduring solution to the perennial problem of scarcity.
6. Reverse the entire deregulation and privatization process which foists on the nation, private individuals as drivers of the economy and engage the organised labour in the process of negotiation on key policy issues.
