Barely 78 hours after a leading Newspaper in the United Kingdom, UK, ‘The Mail Daily’ published a report indicting the embattled Transportation Minister, Rotimi Amaechi, of looting the treasury of Rivers State, to fund the 2015 campaign of President Muhammadu Buhari, the former Governor is yet to deny the report.
The report alleged that President Buhari’s ‘fantastically corrupt” friend, spent over $140 million on the 2015 campaign and has been accused of stealing £500 million.
“But although, Buhari is seen by some as leading the battle against corruption, but worrying allegations swirl around one of his close allies“Rotimi Amaechi, who traveled with the president to the summit, is Nigeria’s transport minister and is said to have bankrolled Buhari’s presidential campaign,” the British Newspaper said.“Amaechi remains in his post despite being accused of misappropriating £338 million by a commission investigating the sale of state assets,” the UK Mail observed as it questioned Buhari’s sincerity in fighting corruption.
Amaechi was the Director General of the 2015 All Progressives Congress, APC, Presidential campaign Organization.
All efforts made by Post-Nigeria to contact his media aides to respond the allegation proved abortive.
Although, political commentators have alleged that Amaechi’s decision not to respond to the allegation might be “either because he is guilty, the charges are frivolous or the issues has been over flogged”.
However, a source close to Amaechi’s legal team told Post-Nigeria that the former governor is currently considering a legal action against the UK Newspaper.
Recall, that the Former Aviation Minister, Fani-Kayode, had in an article recently, alleged that Amaechi, funded Buhari’s campaign.
In swift reaction, the APC’s Publicity Secretary in Lagos State, Joe Igbokwe had responded, maintaining that the claim was a ‘bedtime story for kid’.
Amaechi had previously denied the tag ‘APC ATM’, as he challenged his accusers to provide evidence or bank account through which he was sending money belonging to the state to APC, while also adding that the party is capable of funding its activities.
He said: “Rivers State Government has no money to fund the APC. They have been accusing me of using Rivers money to fund the APC. The APC is a big party. So, it can fund its activities”.
The recent publication by the UK Newspaper has elicited reaction as cross sections of Nigerians have maintained that the matter must not be swept under the carpet.
According to one master P, he said: “I keep wondering why Buhari’s anti graft war should be sentimental, knowing that all the APC’s squares are even the most corrupt.
“No money, No job, No Light yet you can imagine the new fuel price. They no longer care about the poor masses”.
Another Nigerian said; “ I think Ameachi should resign FIRST before hearing proceedings…As for Buhari, fighting corruption should not biased, it should be open to all tiers friends and family members petitioned.
Ewii via social media added: “If it is true that Ameachi was indicted by judicial commission of inquiry in his state, and buhari made a statement that anyone that has a case to answer as regard fraudulent acts will not be appointed, and now he is a minister under the same administration, then we are not ready to fight corruption”.
Also, contributing Musa Abubabakar said; “If this information is correct, the only option is for Buhari to sack Amaechi Rotimi and recover the balance of the looted fund.
“We can forgive Buhari who will definitely claim that he did not know the source of Amaechi’s wealth.
