After weeks of political turbulence which pitted the National leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and its Governors, against members of the Party’s Board of Trustees, BOT, the embattled Chairman, Senator Ali Modu-Sheriff, has finally navigated the stormy waters amidst political horse-trading.
In a dramatic twist, Modu sheriff, with other aggrieved PDP members, reached some agreement over the contentious issues surrounding the May 21 National Convention of the party.
Sheriff and PDP Concerned Stakeholders Forum, led by Professor Jerry Gana, were at logger heads over the zoning of the Party’s leadership position to the North-East, among other issues.
Gana’s group had setup a 57-member starring committee, in a move that signaled a takeover of the party, which would have culminated in a parallel convention.
However, both sides were forced to reach a compromise after series of meetings which culminated in the BOT meeting on Monday, May 16, and held at the party’s secretariat, with Sheriff, Gana and other top members in attendance.
Monday’s BOT meeting had personalities like the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekwerenmadu, former Deputy Senate President, Ibrahim Mantu, Ojo Maduekwe, Senator Waleed Jibril, and former PDP National Chairman, Vincent Ogbulafor.
However, as part of the conditions for a peace deal struck between the National leadership of the party and aggrieved members of the party’s BOT, the proposed amendments to the constitution is to be suspended.
While Sheriff and the party’s 12 governors agreed to suspend the contentious amendment of the party’s constitution, the BOT largely made up of Gana’s group, shifted ground on their opposition to the holding of the National Convention, and the candidature of Sheriff for the position of National Chairman.
While reading out the resolutions reached at the end of the meeting, the newly elected Secretary of the board, Chief Ojo Maduekwe, said the leaders had to allow the superior consideration for unity to prevail.
Post-Nigeria had earlier reported that the emergence of Sheriff as the arrowhead of the PDP, had left a heavy wound in the heart of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
Sheriff, shortly after his emergence as the party’s Acting Chairman, had said that the PDP was strategically positioned to take over from President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019.
He said he would not witch-hunt any of those opposed to his emergence, promising that his main task would be to restore peace and unity to the party.
Many believe that Sheriff is a veteran politician with a huge followership and a long standing political history.
