Nigerians have criticised President Muhammadu Buhari, over his recent lamentation of the fall in government’s revenue, due to fluctuations in global oil prices, adding that the situation is sickening to him and his government.
The Presidency had recently maintained that only a few people in Nigeria are currently feeling the current economic hardship.
This came, following reports that South Africa, had overtaken Nigeria, as the largest economy in Africa.
Buhari said: “It has been a very difficult year for Nigeria. Before we came to office, petroleum sold for about $100 per barrel. Then it crashed to $37, and now oscillates between $40 and $45 per barrel.
“Suddenly, we are a poor country, but commitment to transparency and accountability is not making people know that there is severe shortage”.
However, eminent Nigerians, including a former Archbishop of Lagos, Olubunmi Cardinal Okogie; Chairman of Northern Elders Council, NEC, Alhaji Tanko Yakassai, among others, on Friday, August 11, criticised the President, over the worsening economic situation.
Okogie, in his comment, wondered why the Buhari-led government was being economical by not telling Nigerians the real truth.

The Cleric stated: “Well, it could be that Mr. President and his team are being economical with the truth, or they may have been detached from the masses that brought them to power. I want to agree with those who say that his statement does not reflect the reality on ground.
“In the first place, it doesn’t mean that because the Federal Government is trying to beef up the economy, then the whole nation should go hungry, or everyone should die. That is not right.
“A good father takes care of his children, and he is supposed to be the father of the nation. He must, first and foremost, take care of the children. The President is not paying a good attention to the masses that brought him to power.
“The country is poor and Nigerians are hungry, except of course, those of them in the government. The truth is, they may not be feeling what we are feeling, that is why Mr. President can afford to talk that way.
“He should be told the truth the way it is; we are not only hungry, but dying’’.
On his part, Yakassai, who was a former Special Adviser to ex-President, Shehu Shagari, in the Second Republic, said: “He said he is aware of the agony and pain that Nigerians are passing through. He said he is aware and working hard to overcome the problem, so how can he contradict himself?
“We are all Nigerians, and we can all feel the hardship in the country.
“Who is in Nigeria that is not feeling the pinch? There is nobody in Nigeria today who is not feeling the pinch; nobody including, Aliko Dangote, who is also feeling the pinch”.
Commenting also, a former President-General of the apex Igbo Social Cultural Organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Dr. Dozie Ikedife, said: “It doesn’t make sense to me, to say that Nigerians are not feeling the impact of the poor economy, because of his (Buhari) administration commitment.
“If he said he is committed to alleviate the effect of the poor economy, I can say maybe he did, but to say that Nigerians are not feeling it, is totally wrong. Is he waiting to see people dropping dead on the street?
“The President should travel round the country, and he will know that people are feeling the impact of the poor economy. Look at the state of our roads, un-repaired and un-maintained”.
