Elder statesman, Malam Tanko Yakassai yesterday has accused the Igbos and Yorubas of hiding under calls for restructuring to break up Nigeria.
He warned those who are plotting to break up Nigeria to channel their energies towards ensuring good governance in the polity.
He particularly accused Nigerians of south west and south east extraction of masterminding the agitation with the ultimate desire to ensure that Nigeria breaks up.
Yakassai said Yoruba leaders have never hidden their disdain for the northern part of Nigeria right from the defunct Action Group (AG) days which date back to the 60s.
He said, “ I have always suspected the motive behind such clamour. The whole idea is to deny the north its God-given advantage of population and landmass which it has effectively used to earn appreciable allocation from the Federal Government. Those behind it are not interested in Nigeria ‘s unity and progress.
“Can you tell me who among them have come out to tell us how the restructuring will look like? Anybody hiding under such agenda knows that it would not be acceptable to Nigerians. But this is the beauty of democracy. Anybody is free to voice their opinion.”
Commenting on the recent meeting by Northern Elders who met in Kano he said, “They have agenda that is anti-people. I have never related with them all my life. But I understand their concern on the issue of restructuring of Nigeria.”
